This is a summary of research (an annex report) used to prepare a section of the second assessment report to the IPCC. Reviewed by C. Caseldine (The Holocene, 7, 248-249, 1997), who concludes that the strength of the volume is the breadth of material introduced and in the extensive bibliographies. It provides a valuable review of the environment and ecology of these two areas that are currently under pressure from climate change as well from socio-economic demands. The main weakness of the book is the separate treatment of the two mountain ecosystems, with specialists concentrating on their own areas of research.
