IMPACTS & ADAPTATION
Item #d98feb78
Climate Change and the Global Harvest: Potential Impacts of the
Greenhouse Effect on Agriculture, C. Rosenzweig, D. Hillel, 352 pp.,
Jan. 1998, $65/£49.50 (Oxford Univ.)
Analyses and clarifies the nature of predictable changes and their
potential biophysical impacts. Looks at how the climatic factors affecting
agriculture may be modified in the future, and what practical adaptations
might be undertaken to prevent or overcome adverse impacts on world
agriculture.
Item #d98feb79
The Productivity and Sustainability of Southern Forest Ecosystems in a
Changing Environment (Ecol. Studies, Vol. 128), R. Mickler, S. Fox,
Eds., 994 pp., Jan. 1998, $164 (Springer).
Focuses on the ecological and sociological effects of global climate
change across spatial and temporal scales in southern U.S. forested
ecosystems.
Item #d98feb80
Climate Change and Water Resources Planning Criteria, K.D.
Frederick, D.C. Major, E.Z. Stakhiv, Eds., 314 pp., Aug. 1997, $120
(Kluwer). Reprinted from Climatic Change, 37(1); see Global
Climate Change Digest, Prof. Pubs./Climate Change & Water
Resources, Nov. 1997.
Examines the challenges and the resulting conceptual issues for water
planning and project evaluation. Represents the first attempt to consider
whether and how water resources planning principles and evaluation
criteria should be altered in the face of possible climate change. Reviews
what management ideas work, which ones need to be change, and how planners
and managers should incorporate risk and uncertainty into their decisions.
Item #d98feb81
Climates and Societies A Climatological Perspective
(Geojournal Library 36), M. Yoshino, M. Domrös et al., Eds., 416 pp.,
1997, $180 (Kluwer).
Leading climatologists and environmental scientists address issues such
as climatic changes and fluctuations, climates on a regional scale, and
human-climate relationships on a local scale.
Item #d98feb82
Global Warming: Implications for Freshwater and Marine Fish (Soc.
for Experimental Biol. Seminar Ser. 61), C. Wood, G. McDonald, 440 pp.,
1997, $130 (Cambridge).
Focuses on the effects of temperature at all levels of organization in
fish, particularly the physiological functioning of cells, organs,
organisms, reproduction, and behavior, as well as interactions with
pollutants, and ecological and population dynamics.
Item #d98feb83
Potential Ecological Impacts of Climate Change in the Alps and
Fennoscandian Mountains, A. Guisan, J.I. Holten et al., Eds., 194 pp.,
1995, Sfr 19.60 (Conservatoire et Jardin botaniques de la Ville de Genève).
This is a summary of research (an annex report) used to prepare a
section of the second assessment report to the IPCC. Reviewed by C.
Caseldine (The Holocene, 7, 248-249, 1997), who concludes
that the strength of the volume is the breadth of material introduced and
in the extensive bibliographies. It provides a valuable review of the
environment and ecology of these two areas that are currently under
pressure from climate change as well from socio-economic demands. The main
weakness of the book is the separate treatment of the two mountain
ecosystems, with specialists concentrating on their own areas of research.
