An integrated assessment model used to explore a full range of
cost-effective, advanced energy technologies shows that these technologies
have a profound effect on the future magnitude and rate of anthropogenic
climate change. The introduction of advanced biomass energy production
technology is particularly important. Damage calculations that use only
global mean temperature and income may be underestimating damages by up to
a factor of five. The role of discount rate is extraordinarily important
to technology preference.

Uses the IMAGE 2.0 model to examine scenarios of gradual stabilization
of atmospheric CO2 at 350 and 450 ppm, compared with a no
action scenario in which CO2 increases to 777 ppm. Under the
stabilization scenarios, substantially smaller areas of wheat, millet and
nature reserves are threatened, and sea level rise is reduced. However,
climate continues to change under those scenarios, so impacts are lessened
but not eliminated.
